Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune disease, a condition in which body attacks itself that destroys the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. Therefore, there is no adequate insulin in the body to regulate blood glucose levels. Type 1 diabetes is insulin dependent i.e. it can be treated with insulin only.
What happens when insulin is not produced?
Even when the insulin is not produced, glucose is still absorbed from the food, but without insulin it isn’t transported into the cells. This results in high glucose accumulation in the blood, which is then passed out of the body in urine. The cells are not able to get glucose, which is their main fuel. Hence, the person feels tired and hungry despite eating more, and there is loss of weight.
