Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune disease, with body's own immune system attacking and destroying the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. The trigger for auto-immunity is not clearly known but thought of as one of these:
Infectious diseases
Infectious diseases : It is possible that some virus triggers the autoimmune process that destroys the beta cells of the pancreas that produces insulin. Coxsackie virus, Rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus and retroviruses have been linked to type 1 diabetes
Genetic predisposition
Genetic predisposition : This could be one of the causes, however very small percentages of children with T1D have a parent or sibling with the condition.
Diet
Diet : Exposure to animal milk in early infancyand low vitamin D intake have also been associated with development of type 1 diabetes.
